U.S. again proposed to extend PV import tariffs

On December 8, the U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) forwarded a U.S. domestic PV manufacturing industry report, indicating that so-called Section 201 safeguard tariffs continue to be necessary to prevent or remedy serious injury to the U.S. industry, and the future of the U.S. PV industry still needs trade protection, and thus the USITC recommended that the U.S. government extend Section 201 tariffs for four years.

As of now, U.S. President Joe Biden has not made a final decision on this, but the industry has reacted strongly. Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) president and CEO Abigail Ross Hopper said in a statement, "The growth of U.S. PV manufacturers is critical to the long-term development of domestic clean energy in the U.S. However, the four years of tariffs has proven to be an ineffective way to incentivize solar manufacturing. Now that the U.S. has set a target for installed clean energy power, extending these tariffs will likely prevent the U.S. from reaching that goal."
