On January 10, Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said that the Indonesian government will re-evaluate the domestic coal situation on January 12, and gradually open up Indonesia's coal exports in stages. A previous ban on coal exports, which the government has issued due to concerns about insufficient coal reserves for state-run power generation, may be eased.
It is reported that since January 10, at least a dozen coal carriers have passed the inspections of the Indonesian Coal Mining Directorate General and the Indonesian Shipping Directorate General and have been released to go abroad.

At the same time, the Indonesian Maritime Safety Administration also conducts supervision to ensure that ships which are not on the verification list are not released.

The Indonesia government will also set a new pricing mechanism to meet coal supplies for Indonesia's state-run power generation.
The new scheme requires the National Electric Power Company (PLN) to buy coal at the international market price, rather than at the Indonesian domestic market obligation (DMO). The plan will effectively reduce the willingness of Indonesian domestic coal producers to export coal and ensure domestic energy supply.
