INVT GD880 Engineering VFD for Petroleum Mud Pump

In recent years, oil and gas drilling technology has been developing rapidly. As an important part of drilling equipment, the mud pump is particularly important.

In common positive circulation drilling, it provides high-pressure drilling fluid to remove broken rocks at the bottom of the well for continued drilling; simultaneously cools the drill bit to prevent blowout and collapse; and transmits the power to drive the downhole power drilling tools (turbine and screw power drilling tools). In various tasks of petroleum exploration and oil field development, mud pumps play a vital role in drilling work.

Project Challenges

The commonly used mud pumps are piston or plunger type. The power control system of the mud pump unit in this project consists of low-voltage feeding, VFD, automation control system, etc., which needs to meet the following requirements:

1. Capable of conveying high concentration and high viscosity mud.
2. Stable flow of conveyed liquid without overflow, pulsation, agitation and shearing phenomena.
3. Able to maintain high discharge pressure even under low flow rate, and has sufficient overload capacity.
4. With strong self-priming ability, pumping liquid directly without the need of bottom valve.

INVT Solution

Based on the actual needs, INVT provides a comprehensive solution for driving, adopting GD880 series original cabinet as the pump group VFD. The cabinet integrates incoming switches, LCL filters, rectifier units, inverter units, communication modules, and auxiliary control circuits (AC 220V). It adopts the modular design, with the characteristics of easy maintenance and replacement, high integration level, and is equipped with fuse protection.

The priming pump is driven by the GD880 series single drive VFD, achieving a variable-frequency one-driving-two control mode. The VFD communicates with the control system through the PROFINET communication protocol, and it can also be switched to the terminal-based control mode.

Signals such as I/O, bus, and encoder and motor algorithms are uniformly processed by DSP, with highly efficient response, steady speed accuracy ± 0.01%, torque accuracy ± 3%, ensuring a stable flow of conveying liquids without overflow.

Easy to debug: LCD screen equipped for debugging without the need to consult the operation manual, saving debugging time; standard Ethernet interface, supporting the host controller function flowchart and free programming which is clear and easy to use; fault black box supporting 512 data storage for 10 channels within a specified period of time, saving 100 groups of fault waveform data (cyclic coverage), without the need of fault simulation.

4. Interconnection: Supports PG, I/O, communication and other expansion functions, realizing the interconnection of industrial equipment; supports mainstream communication protocols, which can be well compatible with the rig control system; dual-channel bus adapter, supporting internal switching to solve the problem of redundant backup of large-scale process control for smooth communication.
